Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has extended her condolences to the families affected by the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake near Kete Krachi, which claimed the lives of 15 people, including 11 children.
In a message posted on her X page on Monday, October 13, 2025, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the nation was deeply saddened by the devastating incident that occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
“On behalf of the Government of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the affected community, and all who have been impacted by this tragedy. We stand with you in this moment of grief,” she stated.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were travelling to a funeral when water began seeping into the canoe between Okuma-Akura and Debume.
During an attempt to scoop the water out, one of the passengers allegedly dropped the container being used, causing panic and instability that led the vessel to overturn.
The Assembly Member for the area confirmed the incident to Adom News on October 13, 2025, explaining that about 21 people were on board the canoe at the time.
Fifteen people were confirmed dead, while six others were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment. The survivors have since been discharged.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Worawora Government Hospital for autopsy.

Reports indicate that the canoe was being operated by a 14-year-old boy, raising concerns about safety and enforcement of inland water transport regulations.
The tragedy has thrown the entire Kete Krachi community into mourning, as families and friends grapple with the devastating loss.
