2016 Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has asked the Electoral Commission to uphold the will of Ghanaian voters in the 2016 elections.
Speaking to mark the end of a three-hour anti-Government demonstration dubbed ‘Won Gbo’ at the Hearts Park in Accra, the man whose dreams of leading the nation hit the rocks after two attempts, challenged the country’s electoral body to do what is right in the next election.
It is not in doubt what Nana Addo’s fears may be, bearing in the mind the country’s historic legal tussle over the legitimate winner of the 2012 polls in which the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama.
Addressing a huge crowd of party loyalists and sympathizers, to round up a demonstration against the ongoing power outages, Nana Addo said “the battle is the Lord’s. Let’s continue gathering together and prepare ourselves.
“If he {President Mahama} says he won’t listen to us today, he will listen to us when we put ourselves together during the election; that he will hear us. We appeal to the Electoral Commission to do what is right so that the will of Ghanaians will be upheld”.
The demonstration, which was largely described as successful, has been pooh-poohed by the incumbent NDC, which accuses the opposition of being hypocritical. Their argument is that, the NPP cannot escape blame for the recurring energy crisis because their eight-year tenure contributed to the mess.
The incumbent thus wants the NPP to either proffer pragmatic solutions to the problem or forever hold their peace.
