The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana and the Embassy of Denmark have signed an agreement for the second phase of the Atlantic Corridor Project, covering the period of 2025 to 2028.

The signing ceremony took place at the UNDP Ghana office in Accra on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

The agreement was signed by the UNDP Resident Representative in Ghana, Niloy Banerjee, and the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Jacob Linulf.

Ambassador Linulf reaffirmed Denmark’s strong commitment to promoting peace and stability in Ghana and across the region.

“We have been very firm with our commitment to providing a peaceful and stable environment. Promoting and maintaining peace in Ghana is a common goal for all of us,” he stated.

The Atlantic Corridor Project is part of a regional initiative that seeks to strengthen community resilience and prevent the spread of violent extremism in the Gulf of Guinea.

The project covers Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo.

Countries in this region continue to face significant challenges in combating and preventing violent extremism due to complex socio-economic factors such as poverty, youth unemployment, and inequality.

Governance gaps and corruption have also left some communities feeling marginalised and excluded from political and economic processes, creating fertile ground for extremist recruitment and radicalisation.

To address these issues, the UNDP is implementing a comprehensive regional prevention approach that focuses on peacebuilding, stabilisation, conflict sensitivity, and socio-economic empowerment.

The initiative promotes livelihood opportunities for at-risk youth, strengthens civilian-security cooperation, and enhances community-level social cohesion through dialogue and efforts to counter hate speech and discrimination.

It also supports the implementation of National Action Plans (NAPs) on preventing violent extremism, while fostering cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing among participating countries.

The Phase II extension of the Atlantic Corridor Project is expected to consolidate progress made under the first phase and deepen regional cooperation to promote peace, resilience, and sustainable development across the Gulf of Guinea and the Sahel.
