Man collapses after akpeteshie drinking contest

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Nov. 20, GNA - A 23-year-old unemployed, identified only as Angola, at the weekend collapsed and was rushed to the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital after participating in an akpeteshie drinking contest.

Akpeteshie is an age-old locally distilled alcoholic liquor. A staff nurse at the hospital told newsmen that Angola and three others, had agreed to engage in the contest to find out who could consume more of the alcohol.

She said the four friends went to a popular drinking spot in Dormaa-Ahenkro and ordered four bottles of the liquor for the contest. The nurse added that Angola and Kwame Ketewa emptied their bottles before the stipulated time and were declared joint winners for round one and thus qualified for the grand finale.

Two more bottles were ordered for the two but in the course of its consumption, Angola suddenly stood up but fell heavily to the ground. She said several buckets of water were poured on Angola to revive him after which he was taken to the hospital.
