Too much self-praise in NPP – Wontumi laments

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has lamented a growing culture of self-glorification among its members.

According to the outspoken politician, it is time the party returns to the values of unity and collective purpose that have historically bound it together.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Monday, May 5, 2025, a visibly concerned Chairman Wontumi said the current trend, where individuals openly promote their contributions to the party's success, is weakening the spirit of solidarity that has long defined the NPP.

"Now the self-glory in the NPP is too much. Everyone wants their supporters to blow their trumpet about what they’ve done or are doing for the party," the source stated. “I did this for the party, I did that for the party. This must stop.”

Drawing parallels with early Christian figures, Wontumi stressed that just as Paul, Silas, and Apollos united under the banner of Christianity, members of the NPP must also rally around the party, not personal ambition.

"It is because of the great NPP that you have personalities such as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, and Kwame Baffoe Abronye coming together as one. It was because of Christianity that Paul, Silas, and Apollos united. And so, it is because of the great NPP that you have personalities such as Dr. Bawumia, Ken Agyapong, and Abronye coming together as one. Party work is not for a single individual to do."

"So, if Dr. Bawumia leads, then Kennedy Agyapong is also part, just as Chairman Wontumi and Abronye are also included. All members of the party are part, and we are all at the same level, working in the interest of the party. That’s why Paul said, 'I plant the seed, another person waters it,' but it is not the one who waters it that makes the seed grow. It is the NPP that makes us win, and not an individual. My work alone cannot secure victory for the NPP. Paul must plant the seed, Apollos must water it. That is why God has kept this party till this time and has been able to achieve what it has over the years."

Wontumi’s call for humility and unity is crucially important, as it comes at a time when internal competition and public declarations of personal achievement risk fracturing the cohesion of the party, especially as it gears up for critical national elections in 2028.
