Tuesday, July 1, 2025, marks exactly 65 years since Ghana became a republic in 1960. Although the country attained its independence on March 6, 1957, it became completely free on July 1, 1960.
On this day, Ghana fully liberated itself from colonial rule, and the British monarch, who was then the late Queen Elizabeth II, was no longer Ghana's head of state. Most importantly, on this day, Ghana got its first president in the person of the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
An AP video shared on social media by Ghana Facts & History on Tuesday showed the events that marked the “complete liberation” of Ghana.
The video showed the new president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, arriving at the Parliament of Ghana for official celebrations.
It showed the musical honours, the smart guard, and the lowering of the flag of the British as the last governor, Lord Listowel, entered the Parliament.
The video also showed Dr Kwame Nkrumah addressing a state banquet held to mark Ghana’s First Republic.
It also captured the scenes of celebrations across the country by Ghanaians on July 1, 1960.
