Three ICU patients now stable - GAF updates on El-Wak stampede victims

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced improved recovery outcomes for victims injured during last Wednesday’s stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, an incident that resulted in six deaths.

According to a citinewsroom report on November 18, 2025, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of the Department of Public Relations, said three of the five victims initially placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are now in stable conditions and have been moved to general wards.

She disclosed that 29 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital after the incident, where medical staff worked swiftly to save lives.

“The injured are doing well and receiving the best care. On the day of the incident, we had five people in the ICU. Three of them are now stable and have been moved to another ward,” she said.

Captain Arhin added that 16 victims remain on admission under close monitoring, while others have been discharged and are continuing treatment from home.

She also assured the public that the 37 Military Hospital, with government support, is covering all medical costs for those affected by the stampede.

The tragic incident occurred on November 12, when thousands of young applicants rushed into the El-Wak Sports Stadium to participate in the military recruitment exercise, resulting in a stampede at entry points and causing multiple injuries and fatalities.
