The immediate past Member of Parliament (NPP) for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was assaulted at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, one of the 19 stations for the ongoing rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.
In videos that have since gone viral, the former lawmaker was captured being brutally assaulted, causing her to lose her footing and fall to the ground, seemingly helpless.
She was shielded by police officers deployed to provide security at the polling station, as the thugs went on a rampage, unleashing chaos.
The assault has since sparked varied reactions from the general public, generating widespread condemnation from Ghanaians and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Public sentiment reflects calls for a swift investigation and the prosecution of individuals who perpetrated the attack on the former MP.
According to them, the incident is a dent on the country’s image and its reputation for democratic values, raising concerns about the potential dangers that such pockets of violence could breed if not swiftly curtailed.

Hawa Koomson was wrong using the pepper spray but that doesn't guarantee the assault on her.

Beating women is a NO and President Mahama must make sure the people who assaulted her face the law.
I used to wonder why someone will fight and assault people because of a politics but after seeing what happened to Hawa Koomson and the others I understand them, you beat a woman because of politics FINE

In 2012, they used thugs to beat up Ursula Owusu at Odododiodo. 13 years down the line, they’ve done same to Hawa Koomson. They won’t talk because it’s their favorites in the helm of affairs now.

I feel “terribly sad” for Hawa Koomson in Mustapha Hameed’s voice.

All your justification for the attack on Hawa Koomson is “she was responsible for electoral violence”. All without substantial evidence.
— Torgbuigà (@Mr_Ceyram) July 11, 2025
If you have the evidence, why don’t you present it to the police for her arrest?
That assault on Hawa Koomson is utterly disgusting and unacceptable
— Fati. (@Teemah433) July 11, 2025
Hawa Koomson can be a thorn in the flesh but assaulting her is completely unacceptable.
