Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has described the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives as a national tragedy that transcends political boundaries.
Speaking on Friday, August 8, 2025, the second day of Ghana’s three-day national mourning, Dr Bawumia, while addressing the media at Jubilee House, said the grief is shared by the entire nation, not just one political party.
“I think the grief comes to all Ghanaians. This is not just me. It is not the NDC, it is all of us,” he said.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing two cabinet ministers; Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, along with senior military officers and party leaders.

Dr Bawumia expressed deep sorrow, extending condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the bereaved families.
“Eight public officials on official duty they had this tragic accident, and they all lost their lives. Ghana has lost a tremendous amount from this particular tragedy. This is why I’m here to lay a wreath to express my condolences,” he said.
When asked if his entourage would attend the funeral, Bawumia stressed that national unity was paramount:
“This is not a partisan issue. You should expect full participation because it is our national duty to fully participate.”
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, President Mahama, Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, senior government officials, and citizens gathered at Jubilee House to begin the official mourning period.
