Striking junior doctors sacked

Junior doctors at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital have reportedly been sacked for striking over unpaid salary arrears.

This development comes after the doctors were contemplating on going to court to seek an order to compel the government to pay them their 9-month salary arrears.

It would be recalled that Junior doctors across the country embarked on a strike over their unpaid salaries about two weeks ago, but the house officers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi resumed work last week after receiving firm assurance that their salaries would be paid.

The acting Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), Dr. Daniel Asare, who had earlier indicated that the hospital did not have enough funds in their Internally Generated Fund (IGF) to pay the salary arrears in lieu of government payment, noted that the house officers have received some feeding and transport allowance.

He thus expressed his discontentment at what he termed as disrespect from young doctors to continue the strike action leading to their sack.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities say there are plans to replace the dismissed doctors.
