Strikes will not fix salary problems - FWSC

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has bemoaned the constant strikes and industrial actions by some government workers in resolving grievances related to their migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.

At a press Conference today, Chief Executive of the FWSC, George Smith Graham said many of the strike have come about because the workers have failed to follow laid down procedures in resolving their issues.

“… These strike actions have unfortunately not followed the laid down procedures as laid down in the Labor Act. It has also been characterized by unnecessary prosecution of grievances in the mass media thereby creating disruption of the issues,” he stated.

Mr. Graham further stated, “There have been strikes in an increasingly politically polarized society. These have involved a huge powerful group within institutions such as the health sector, education sector and to some extent the civil service who have used a strike action as a ploy to obtain one’s pound of flesh.”

“For all of these cases, the FWSC has insisted that the grievances were as follows. Currently, most of the issues have been resolved either by the grievance review committee for issues involving grievances and conditions of service…. or the National Labor Commission for the other issues,” he added.
