Ports and Harbours should take over Volta River transport

Accra, Dec.6, GNA - The Ministry of Roads and Transport should surrender its supervision over the Lower Volta River transport system to the Ministry of Ports and Harbours to reduce the daily anxiety and frustration on the river water ways.

Mr. Ken Dzirasah, Member for South Tongu, who made the plea during a contribution to the motion for the approval of 3.665 trillion cedis for the service of the ministry of Roads Transport, said the sooner it was done, the better for the poor people of the Lower Volta. He said the river had separated families and traditional areas hence the need to make commuting on the river a matter of priority. The member asked that the under-used river crafts be leased out to the outlining six District Assemblies who could pool their resources to make them more useful.

Other members in their contribution called for more resources for the Ministry to build more roads.

Dr. Richard Anane, Minister of Roads Transport, assured the House that he would ensure that the principles of equity permeate issues concerning the building of the country's road network.
