Sowutuom-Omanjor Clash: Bring perpetrators to book – Ga Traditional Council to police

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, together with the Ga Traditional Council, have charged the Ghana Police Service to bring to book all persons found culpable in the recent violent clashes that occurred during the climax of the Homowo Festival at Sowutuom.

Three persons were killed and several others injured following the clash between members of Sowutuom and Omanjor on August 30, 2025.

In a statement dated September 2, 2025, the traditional council, expressing its displeasure over the incident, condemned the act, while sending its condolences to the bereaved families.

“The Ga Mantse His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and the entire membership of the Ga Traditional Council, have learnt with shock and dismay the recent acts of violence that resulted in deaths and injuries around Omanjor and Sowutuom over the weekend, during the celebration of the annual Homowo Festival.

“The entire membership of the Ga Traditional Council condemns these attacks that resulted in deaths and several casualties,” portions of the statement read.

The council also called on the police to restore and maintain peace in the neighboring communities to avert any further occurrences.

“The Council wishes to express its deepest condolence to the families of the bereaved as well as hoping for a speedy recovery of the injured. The Council is calling on the Accra Regional Police Command to ensure peace is restored to the area as well as bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book,” it added.

Background

Violent clashes between two rival groups from Sowutuom and Omanjor resulted in a shooting incident that claimed three lives.

The ceremony reportedly took a violent turn when the traditional Kpoikpoi sprinkling was disrupted by a clash between rival groups, resulting in the death of three persons and several others including a police officer, sustaining various degree of injuries.

Additionally, reports available to GhanaWeb added that the conflict, stemmed from a dispute over the approved route for the ritual.

According to reports, the Omanjor community failed to adhere to the designated route approved for the ceremonial sprinkling of kpoikpoi, a traditional maize-based dish, prompting a confrontation with a rival group from Sowutuom.

The group from Sowutuom, armed and with the intention to halt the ceremony, allegedly opened fire, injuring several people and killing three in the ensuing chaos.
