KMA calls for support

Kumasi, May 14, GNA - Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, has given the assurance that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would give the needed attention to environmental issues in an effort to restore to Kumasi its status as the "Garden City of West Africa".

She challenged Non-Governmental and Community-Based organisations as well as residents of the metropolis to liaise with the KMA to develop recreational and tourist attraction sites.

Residents, she said, should also be law-abiding and adhere to sanitation regulations for the beautification of the metropolis. Madam Appiagyei made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi at the weekend.

The KMA boss pointed out that since Kumasi had been chosen as one of the cities to host the impending African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2008 tournament, it behoved residents to be responsive to environmental issues and also practice good personal hygiene to prevent communicable diseases.

She said in view of the economic benefits corporate bodies and residents stood to gain from the CAN 2008 tournament; the KMA was intensifying its sensitisation of the public to adhere to its bylaws. Madam Appiagyei further stressed the need for assembly members to work within a framework of peace and unity and strive to avoid internal wrangling so as to move activities of the KMA forward. "Let us all do away with egocentrism and together put all hands on deck to extricate the city of Kumasi from its manacles of problems", she remarked.

While commending the media for playing a pivotal role in promoting activities of the KMA, Madam Appiagyei also stressed the need for them to be circumspect about their reportage. "Press freedom is truly prevailing in the country but please do not forget to cross-check your facts from the designated point of the assembly before any publication", she said. 14 May 06
