Six commercial drivers have been arrested following an enforcement operation led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to clamp down on the charging of unapproved transport fares across parts of the metropolis.
The arrests were made on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, during a taskforce exercise aimed at ensuring compliance with approved transport fares.
According to a report by metrotvonline.com on December 18, 2025, the operation began around 5:30 PM at the COCOBOD section of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in Accra’s Central Business District and extended to the Farisco traffic light area, where commuter activity was intense due to peak-hour traffic.
The taskforce targeted 'trotros' and other commercial vehicles operating on busy routes including Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa and Lapaz.

The mayor and his team moved through heavy traffic, stopping vehicles to verify fares being charged.
Drivers were questioned on the amounts they charged, while passengers onboard were also engaged to confirm whether the fares paid matched the approved rates.
The checks disclosed mixed compliance, with some drivers adhering to the approved fares while others charged higher amounts.
Six drivers were subsequently arrested for charging unapproved transport fares as authorities reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing fare regulations and protecting commuters.
