Corruption at Ghana Telecom

The recently inaugurated three member Interim Management Committee of Ghana Telecom (GT) has a huge hill to climb indeed, after the exit of the former Malaysian gatekeepers.

With high expectation for some sort of recovery after talks of years of neglect under the Malaysians some of who employed the use of sputum to determine disapproval, it now looks as though the turn around is meant for individual corrupt pockets, effectively making nonsense of the fight against indiscipline.

Many clients and potential clients of Ghana Telecom (GT) have threatened action against what they describe as the rot that is taking place at the offices of the company in recent times.

While some abhor what they see as clever tactics employed by GT to extract money for services they cannot deliver by occasionally announcing certain bonanzas, others now want the Communications Minister to spell out his vision on communication to the people so they know what to expect from public officials who are exercising temporary charge over public property.

A fuming potential client who pleaded anonymity because of his position in the civil service recounted three different occasions when despite his age, but HIPC status, officials in charge of telephone delivery attempted to rake millions of cedis into their private pockets.

According to the very high ranking civil servant, desk officials tried without shame to extort as much as a 200 per cent in unofficial monies before application forms for telephone rentals could be entertained.
