Students urged to register on campuses

Accra Feb 15, GNA - Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, has urged students above 18 years, particularly those in the Universities to re-register at their various campuses when the Voters Register is re-opened next month.

He said that would enable them to conveniently cast their votes on December 7, without travelling to their places of residence or former registration centres during the general elections.

In an interview at the weekend, with the Ghana News Agency in respond to sentiments by some University students that, the opening of the Register should be rescheduled from March 16 to 29, to favour students who had just resumed classes after their semester break.

According to the students it would be difficult for them to go back to their former registration centres to re-register.

Dr Afari-Gyan pointed out that the replacement of the Voters Register was a very important exercise, "No eligible voter must miss". The fresh registration exercise would among others measures help correct the current Register containing 10.5 million voters, out of a population of less than 20 million.

He said every eligible citizen, including students had to strive to register during the exercise if were to vote on December 7 and in any other elections or referendum to be organised.
