Samia Nkrumah should “forget” about becoming President of Ghana, Pollster Ben Ephson has said.
The Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper told Kasapa FM’s morning show host Fiifi Banson on Wednesday that the daughter of Ghana’s first President will be rejected by Ghanaians at the polls if she jumps into the presidential race.
“Samia should forget it,” Ephson said.
According to him, “political dynasty doesn’t work in this country.”
Samia recently stepped down as Chair of the Convention People’s Party (CPP); founded by her father Dr Kwame Nkrumah, after he split from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
She became Chair of the party after losing her Jomoro seat in Parliament in the 2012 general elections.
Her decision not to run for another term as Chair of the CPP has fuelled speculations that she has her eyes on the presidency and would want to contest the 2016 presidential elections on the ticket of the CPP.
She recently hinted at her presidential ambition when she told the party’s Ashanti Regional delegates conference in Kumasi that she would not mind running on the ticket of a merged Nkrumahist party between the CPP and the People’s National Convention (PNC).
The two parties have tried for more than a decade to join forces but to no avail.
However, Mr. Ephson believes unlike developed democracies where political dynasties are an easy possibility, Ghanaians will not tolerate such a circumstance, a situation he says will be the bane of Ms Nkrumah should she step into the presidential fray.
