The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital, has responded to a viral video showing a clash between its emergency ward staff and a group that included a well-known social media activist, according to a graphic.com.gh report on August 18.

The incident reportedly began with delays in treating a critically injured patient; a situation which quickly escalated into shouting and physical assault of a nurse.

The issue forced hospital officials to call the Ghana Police Service to help calm the situation.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Juliana Hariwa, the hospital confirmed that the incident happened while medical staff were handling several emergency cases at the same time.

According to the statement from the hospital, relatives and friends of the accident victims reportedly "invaded the emergency triage," leading to disruptions that forced a temporary stop in services.

It added that "their overwhelming presence disrupted the smooth delivery of care, caused unnecessary tension, and even threatened the safety of our clinicians."

The hospital also strongly condemned the attack on staff, calling it "unacceptable" and stressing that such behaviour "puts lives at risk."

The hospital repeated its promise to provide "quality and timely healthcare" but asked the public not to take videos in clinical areas without permission, saying it could break privacy rules. Although the statement didn’t respond directly to the activist’s claims of negligence, it asked for "cooperation and mutual respect" to help keep both patients and staff safe.

The incident has started a wider conversation about the balance between patient rights and staff safety in Ghana’s busy and stretched public health system.
