The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has expressed concern over what he describes as the grow threat to free speech under the current administration.
He condemned any attempts to suppress citizens’ voices, labeling such actions as “tyrannical.”
In a post shared on X on April 9, 2025, Ahiagbah said, “The idea that a citizen cannot question or whistleblow under this government is tyrannical. President Mahama must not watch our country degenerate into that abyss.”
Ahiagbah’s remarks come amid concerns raised by the NPP following what some perceive as politically-motivated pressure on Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, whose recent revelations about some aircraft carrying illegal drugs and laundered money, has triggered concerns.
Ahiagbah warned that allowing Fordjour’s right to free speech to be undermined sets a dangerous precedent.
“If we allow Ntim Fordjour's right to free speech to be curtailed for partisan reasons, tomorrow, there will be a basis to curtail John Doe's rights because he is NDC. Is this the democracy we want to build?” he questioned.
He also called on citizens, civil society, and political leaders across the spectrum to push back against any erosion of democratic freedoms, particularly the right to free expression.
“We must signal to this government and future governments that the right of citizens to free speech is absolute and inviolable.
“This is a democracy; the right of citizens to free speech must be defended at all costs," he added.
Rev Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, publicly claimed that two foreign flights suspiciously landed in Ghana in March 2025, allegedly involved in cocaine trafficking and money laundering activities.
These claims have been strongly denied by the John Mahama-led government, which has urged the MP to cooperate fully with the country’s security agencies as investigations continue.
In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, around 20 operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), armed with AK-47s, attempted to arrest Rev Ntim Fordjour at his residence.
The arrest attempt was foiled when members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by their leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, along with senior figures from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), rushed to his home in solidarity.
