Prof. Mills gives to Suaman flood victims.

Enchi (W/R), Aug 19, GNA-Professor John Evans Atta Mills, National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, on Friday donated GH 2,000 cedis (20 million cedis) to recent flood victims in the Aowin-Suaman District of the Western Region. The Western Regional Chairman of the party, Dr. John Frank Abu, presented the money on his behalf to the committee established by the district assembly to receive and distribute money and relief items to the affected people.

The floods that occurred about three weeks ago affected more than 7,811 people from 10 communities.

About 582 houses at Enchi, Agyakaa, Adomikrom, Omanpe, Gyensue, Yiwaabra, Boiso, Yaakese, Akyenfo and Asem all in the Suaman constituency collapsed after three days of torrential rain fall. Some of those rendered homeless are putting-up with friends and relatives while others are living in classrooms and church premises. He suggested the establishment of a special housing loan scheme to enable the victims to rebuild their houses.

Dr. Abu, accompanied by Colonel Kaku Korsah (RTD), Regional Organiser, and Mr. Joseph Kobina, Regional Secretary of the party, inspected some of the collapsed houses and damage caused by the floods at Enchi and expressed the party's sympathy for the victims. He called for more support from individuals, organisations and the government to alleviate the hardships of the victims. Mr. Ellis Duncan Famiyeh, District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) who received the money on behalf of the committee, thanked Professor Atta Mills for the kind gesture.

He said the committee has so far received about 3,500 Gh cedis (35, million cedis) and called for more donations in kind or in cash to resettle the flood victims.

Mr. Famiyeh said damage to property was estimated at Gh 36 million cedis (360 billion cedis).

Nana Odeneho Brentu IV, Omanhene of Enchi, thanked Professor Mills for the donation and added his voice to the call for more support to the victims.
