A vox pop conducted by GhanaWeb TV has revealed mixed reactions from some members of the public following an uproar online after it emerged that President John Dramani Mahama used a private jet belonging to his brother for an official trip.
The development has sparked widespread debates among some Ghanaians, with some citizens defending the president’s decision, while others call for greater transparency in the use of private resources for state-related activities.
Speaking to GhanaWeb TV, some respondents argued that there was nothing wrong with the president using a private aircraft owned by a relative if it did not place a financial burden on the state.
“If the plane belongs to his brother and the government is not paying for it, then I don’t see any problem,” one interviewee said.
Others, however, expressed concerns about the potential ethical implications and the need for clear accountability.
They maintained that the presidency must avoid situations that could create perceptions of favoritism or conflicts of interest.
“Even if the plane belongs to his brother, Ghanaians deserve to know the details,” another respondent noted.
Some other participants also used the opportunity to highlight broader issues regarding government spending and the management of state resources.
They argued that discussions about presidential travel should focus on ensuring cost efficiency and accountability in governance.
The vox pop highlighted the growing interest among citizens in matters of governance and transparency, with many calling for clearer guidelines on how private assets should be used in support of presidential duties.
