President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed.
A statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, indicated that the recall was over allegations of vote-buying against Baba Jamal during the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The statement also indicated that although the President recognises the NDC's investigation into the matter, the recall of Baba Jamal is necessary because he is the only public official implicated in the allegation.
It added that the recall is necessary because the action of the High Commissioner, if confirmed to be true, violates the code of ethics established by the President for his appointees.
"In his directive to the Minister for Foreign Affairs recalling Mr Baba as High Commissioner, the President noted that while the allegations of vote-buying were made against multiple candidates who contested the primaries, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them. The President also noted the public statement by the General Secretary of the NDC indicating that the party has commenced its own investigations into the allegations arising from the primaries.
“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government's Code of Conduct for Political Appointees,” part of the statement read.
“The recall takes effect immediately, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been directed to take the necessary administrative and diplomatic steps to give effect to this directive,” the statement concluded.

The primaries, which attracted more than 1,100 accredited delegates from across the constituency, was held amid reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying.
In a statement issued on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the NDC confirmed it had been notified of incidents of vote-buying and inducement involving some aspirants.
“The attention of the national executives of the NDC has been drawn to the widespread incidents of inducement and vote buying allegedly perpetrated by senior aspirants at the primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency today,” the statement said.
The party described the alleged acts as a direct violation of its core values and principles, stressing its commitment to upholding internal democracy and discipline.
Following his victory, Baba Jamal is expected to lead the NDC into the March 3 parliamentary by-election as the party seeks to retain the Ayawaso East seat.
