President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in China with First Lady Lordina Mahama as part of his official three-day visit to Beijing to participate in the Women’s Summit.

The summit is scheduled to take place from October 13 to 14, 2025.

The meeting marks the 30th anniversary of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in September 1995, which produced the globally recognized Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA).

The main objective of the two-day high-level event is to reaffirm the commitments made during the 1995 conference toward promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.

The 1995 conference was a historic milestone at which 189 governments adopted the BPfA, establishing the most comprehensive global roadmap for achieving gender equality.

President Mahama’s participation carries additional significance, as he is attending the event in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues.

This role underscores the continent’s commitment to accelerating the implementation of the BPfA’s 12 critical areas of concern, which cover issues ranging from women’s economic empowerment and political participation to health and the environment.

The summit, which will feature a keynote address by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony, will bring together dozens of Heads of State and Government, parliamentary leaders, deputy prime ministers, and leaders of international organisations.
