Water privatisation would worsen plight of the poor - forum.

Tarkwa (W/R), Nov. 1, GNA - Participants at a public forum organised at Tarkwa on Wednesday by the Coalition Against Water Privatisation have urged the Government to abandon the idea to privatise water provision in the country because that would worsen the plight of the people. They said instead, the Government should streamline the operations of the Ghana Water Company (GWC) and resourced to enable it to improve and expand its operations in the country.

Mr. Alhassan Adam of the national coalition against privatisation of water, and Mr. Ammoro Mpese, a civil servant said GWC has the capacity to improve upon its services if it manages its resources, including revenue mobilisation more efficiently.

They said the government should listen to the voice of the poor and venerable in the society and not to succumb to outside pressures to privatise water to the detriment of the well being of the people. Mr. Adam said the campaign against water privatisation would be intensified and sustained because the people would be worse off if water is privatised.
