The Deputy Minister of the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced that the government is initiating a major overhaul of the police administration, particularly in areas that illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, are prevalent.
Speaking in a recent interview on JoyNews, he alleged that some police officers who were deployed under operations like Operation Vanguard have also ventured into illegal mining.
"We are going to transfer all the commanders that are in the mining areas. And there are good reasons to do that. What we realise is that we sent some of them on Operation Vanguard and some of them converted.
"They've gotten to know the people. They are so used to the people and sometimes even if they want to exact any punishment, because they've been living in the community for a very long time, they find it difficult. You know Ghanaian communities and how we live; we become like family," he stated.
Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi further indicated that replacing the complicit police officers is a first step to reform the service.
"There is going to be a very comprehensive overhaul of the police administration in terms of where each and every one will be policing. So, that is going to be done.
"I believe that is the process in place and we are going to effect that very, very soon. The IGP was instructed; we expect him to act immediately," he added.
