The Ghana Police Service has provided new details on Thursday’s incident at Labone, describing it as a foiled robbery plot that targeted three banks in the enclave.

According to an update on August 14, 2026, the police said it received intelligence around 10:45 am that indicated that a gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank.

A team was then dispatched to the area, where suspects were found in two vehicles parked near the banks.

The statement added that one of the vehicles sped off upon sighting the officers.

Police, however, pursued and arrested a suspect identified as Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, while another occupant escaped.

The second vehicle’s occupants opened fire on the officers in an attempt to flee, sparking a shootout that left two suspects dead.

Earlier, the police had announced that a robbery attempt at the GCB Bank Labone branch had been foiled, with two suspects killed and one arrested.

GCB Bank, however, issued a statement denying that its branch had been breached or that customers, staff, funds or property had been affected.

In a latest update, the police confirmed that two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS‑1434‑18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS‑7915‑17, were recovered along with a blow pistol.

Meanwhile, the arrested suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
