The Ghana Police Service has vowed to sack officers who are caught extorting money from motorists and other road users.
According to the service, it constantly receives complaints over the conduct of unscrupulous personnel who demand spot fines from traffic offenders even though the law covering such instant punishment is yet to be implemented.
Director General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department, DSP Awuni Angwutobge explained that the proposed spot fine is yet to be approved, and is therefore cautioning police officers to desist from the practice.
In an interview with Starr News, DSP Angwutogbe said the general public must not hesitate to report acts of extortion from any police officer.
βIt is on social media platforms that Police officers have started extorting monies on the basis of spot fines and my information is that they charge between 500 and 600 cedis.
"...I want the media to carry it out there that the spot fine has not yet been implemented and every Police officer who does that is a criminal,β Angwutobge fumed.
