Police Service Receives 50 New Vehicles

Government has handed over 50 Peugeot 306 saloon cars valued at about $692,500 to the Ghana Police Service for patrol duties in the cities and on the highways. The vehicles are the first batch of five hundred different vehicles to be provided the service. Three hundred and fifty more Peugeot cars imported from Nigeria are expected in the country within the next few months.

About 100 Land Rovers equipped with modern communication gadgets would also be imported while funds will be released to rehabilitate about 100 broken down Land Rovers.

In a statement during the hand over, President Kufuor said good governance rests on the maintenance of law and order, which is also dependent on the efficient performance of police duties. The President said the police can only be effective when it is equipped with the requisite modern communication gadgets and mobility.

He asked the Police Administration to maintain the vehicles, warning that Ghana has no money to waste. President Kufuor assured the police personnel that the acute housing problem facing the service and poor emoluments are being considered.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ernest Owusu-Poku said the provision of the vehicles is a demonstration of government's determination and commitment to assist the Service render good services to the people.
