Forty-two trafficked children rescued

Bole (N/R), Aug 10, GNA- Forty-two children mostly girls, from the Upper East Region, suspected to be on their way to the Southern part of the country, have been repatriated by the police to Wa for investigations.

A woman, Madam Arama Kabita, 38, suspected to be trafficking in children is said to have promised them jobs on arrival.

Briefing the press in an interview, the police Chief Inspector, Mr Joe Sanzie, said the children mostly from the JSS and primary schools, were intercepted by the Bole Police, following a tip off by the District Information Officer, Mr Leonard S. Tingbani.

He said Mr Tingbani, who was returning to the North from Accra, became suspicious, when he saw the children in a broken down vehicle, when the bus he was travelling on stopped to assist the vehicle in distress.

Mr Tingbani took the opportunity to interview some of the children and was informed that, most of them were coming from Ermond, near Lawra in the Upper West Region.

The children, he said claimed they had paid their lorry fares and a fee to enable them to travel with Madam Kabita, who had promised them jobs on their arrival at Techiman.

The District Information Officer made a report to the Bole Police, when they got there, and the children were later rescued and transported back to Bole from Seripe, where their vehicle broke down. A further report was made to the Wa Police, who came for the children and are now assisting the police in their investigations. Madam Kabita and the driver of the vehicle, Peter Dery, have also been sent back to Wa to assist the police in their investigations.
