As schools reopen, many parents of children in basic schools are growing increasingly agitated by the total number of books prescribed for their kids to buy.
According to some disappointed parents, their children are required to purchase at least eight textbooks, over 20 exercise books, and approximately 15 notebooks.
Many distraught parents who perceive the number of prescribed books as excessive have taken to social media to express their grievances over the development.
Increment in prices of books: Parents appeal for govt’s intervention
While some are concerned about the nature of the current textbooks, claiming that the kids are made to write in them so that once one child uses it, it cannot be transferred to another, others claimed most of the books they are tasked to buy are unnecessary.
"They ask us to buy these plenty books but there are some that the kids don't even use at all. I have already spent thousand cedis on buying books for my son who is in class 4 but I am told it is still not enough so what do they teach our kids?" an angry parent shared her frustration.
"What does a class three kid need 20 exercise books and 15 notebooks for? The most annoying part is that the moment they move to class 4, we will have to buy even more. What do our children learn?" another asked.
Parents are not only worried about the financial burden of buying multiple textbooks for their kids, but also concerned that the kids do not use most of the books at all.
Some called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to quickly intervene to address their concerns.
Below are some of the concerns raised by some parents.
