Emergency Committee Warns Trouble Makers In The North

Accra, (Greater Accra) 27 Oct.

The National Emergency Committee today warned that the security agencies would deal firmly with anyone ''who attempts to provoke any disturbances'' in the former conflict areas of the Northern Region. An official statement in Accra reminded the public of efforts being made to secure permanent peace in the area and said ''the security agencies have been directed to take appropriate preventive measures to ensure the maintenance of law and order''. The statement said the committee has taken note of recent reports of activities of some elements which could undermine progress made by the Permanent Peace Negotiating Team (PPNT) to ensure peace and stability. ''In this regard, the terms of reference of the PPNT have been broadened to include some areas in the northern part of the Volta Region'', it said. The National Emergency Committee noted with satisfaction progress made by the PPNT to bring about peace and reconciliation and said this has been achieved with support from chiefs, people and opinion leaders. It reminded the public that the ''restriction on the movement of, acquisition and possession of firearms and ammunition in the Northern Region remains in force. ''This restriction has been extended to the northern part of the Volta Region, covering the Nkwanta and Kete-Krachi districts''. Meanwhile, the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service is offering a reward of three million cedis for information leading to the arrest of persons who broke into the CEPS armoury at Yendi recently and made away with some arms and ammunition.
