An International Statesperson Award has been conferred on President John Dramani Mahama by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia in recognition of his contributions to global leadership, democratic governance, and international diplomacy.

The honour, which is the Council’s highest distinction, was presented at a ceremony held on Friday, March 27, 2026.

Established in 1973, the award is given to world leaders whose work promotes peace, freedom, and has a lasting influence on international affairs. President Mahama’s recognition is a notable moment, as he becomes the first African leader to be awarded since its introduction.

During the ceremony, the Council’s President and CEO, Lauren Swartz, commended President Mahama’s leadership journey, pointing to his dedication to democratic governance, his role in ensuring peaceful political transitions, and his efforts in strengthening global partnerships while supporting economic and regional growth.

She also acknowledged his advocacy for Africa on the global stage.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama credited his commitment to peace and development to the legacy of influential African figures such as Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.

He noted that their vision and sacrifices continue to guide his efforts toward unity, justice, and progress across Africa and beyond.
