Over 4000 candidates contesting for District Level, Unit Committee elections in Western region

A total number of 4,033 candidates across the 17 constituencies in the Western Region are contesting for the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections today, Tuesday, December 17.

Out of the total figure, 1,256 candidates are competing in the Assembly elections while 2,777 are also competing in the unit committee elections in all the 363 electoral areas and 2,225 polling stations.

Contestants of the District Assembly elections comprise 1,166 males and 90 females whereas, at the unit committee level elections, 2,485 males are racing with 292 females.

About one million, one hundred and sixty-seven thousand three hundred and eight voters are expected to exercise their franchise today in the Western Region.

Speaking to Daniel Kaku in an exclusive interview, the Western Regional Director at the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Angelina Tagoe said that so far, the process is running smoothly and therefore urged all eligible voters to show up and cast their ballots.

She seized the opportunity to commend the candidates for conducting themselves well without causing any problem at the various polling stations.

Mrs. Tagoe also hailed the security agencies for exhibiting the highest sense of professionalism to ensure peace and order.

The EC Director, however, cautioned those who hatched dubious and diabolic machinations to sow discord and disturbances at the polling stations, to halt the practice adding that the security agencies are ready to deal with anything that will mar the election by providing massive security protection to all voters and other observers before, during and after the polls.

At the time of filing this report, no incidence of violence had been recorded in the Region but the voting attendance is low compared to Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
