The Director of Legal Affairs of the United Party (UP), Andrew Appiah-Danquah, has rejected claims that Ghana’s democracy is under attack, arguing that the country has made significant progress in democratic governance.

He said although Ghana’s democracy was not perfect, the country had made “huge strides” and continued to uphold the principle that sovereign power belongs to the people.

Speaking on TV3’s NewDay on September 28, 2026, Appiah-Danquah said citizens should not be misled by individuals pursuing what he described as ‘parochial agendas’ into believing that the country’s democratic system was under threat.

“We should not allow anybody in pursuit of their parochial agenda to deceive us that our democracy is under attack. Our democracy is certainly not under attack,” he said.

He said the UP’s planned demonstration on Friday, October 2, would instead focus on strengthening democratic principles, particularly accountability, probity, due process and respect for the rule of law.

According to him, the demonstration is intended to encourage governments to institutionalise accountability and ensure that public officials who use state power against the interests of citizens are held responsible.

Ghana’s democracy is at stake – Amaliba

Appiah-Danquah said the demonstration was not aimed at attacking any individual or political party but was intended to send a message to the government that ‘it cannot be business as usual’.

He cited concerns over public projects and expenditure, questioning situations where billions of dollars were reportedly spent on projects, but the expected results were not visible.

He therefore urged Ghanaians who believed in strengthening the country’s democracy to join the demonstration, saying the event would be focused on ensuring that the key ingredients of democracy worked effectively.

Appiah-Danquah also said Ghana’s democratic achievement should not be measured only by the peaceful transfer of power between the two major political parties.

He said while Ghana had distinguished itself in the sub-region by successfully changing governments through elections, democracy must also be reflected in accountability, probity, due process and respect for the rule of law.
