Seventy-five retired workers of Legon feted

Accra, Nov. 6, GNA - The University of Ghana has organised a send-off party for 75 workers, who are going on retirement after serving the University for decades.

These workers served the University from 10 to 39 years and are made up of 29 junior and 25 senior non-teaching staff and 21 teaching staff. Those, who served between 10 and 19 years were presented with Getto blasters; between 20 and 29 years received a ''12'' colour TV and 30 and 40 years took home tabletop refrigerators.

In addition to these gifts the retired workers received certificates of honour and cash.

The Legon branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the University of Ghana Staff Association (UGSSA) also presented parting gifts to their members.

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Assenso-Okyere thanked the retired workers for the meritorious services they rendered to the University and appealed to them ''to uphold high the integrity of this august University as you go out.''

He said the University had begun developing new campuses in the regions to bring tertiary education closer to Ghanaians.

The Vice-Chancellor said out of 20,000 applications received for distance education only half of the number was taken.

The Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Wereko Ampem II commended the University Management for recognising the efforts of its workers and University Council Members, who rendered services to the University free of charge.
