Odumase-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery College holds matriculation

The Nursing and Midwifery Training College at Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region has held its 2nd matriculation ceremony to welcome 100 new students into the 2019/2020 academic year, who joined its Nurse Assistant Preventive program.

In an address, the Principal, Joana Owusu Danso while congratulating the freshmen and women for gaining admission into the institution reminded them of the essence of the profession and the required discipline and commitment desired of them.

She said during the academic year's admission process, the college received hundreds of applications out of which 100, comprising of 93 females and 7 males were admitted to pursue a Nurse Assistant Preventive program.

Mrs Joana Owusu Danso also reminded tutors of their roles to instill priceless virtues in the students.

The school established in 2016 has already produced hundreds of graduates with nursing and midwifery backgrounds serving in various health institutions. But the school is reeling under a myriad of challenges.

The Principal observed that a number of challenges bedeviling the institution include its current location which is not conducive for academic purposes and thus hampering sound academic activities.

Though GETFund and the government through the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly are building a new site for the school, the principal said the place would only be suitable for use if portable water and electricity supply were provided and a facelift given to the bad road leading to the new school campus.

Another challenge confronting the facility is the lack of a school bus to convey students for academic trips, the inadequate number of computers, library books, equipment in the skills lab and furniture for student use which inadequacies impede teaching and learning.

The Principal, therefore, called on the Deputy Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive and Member of Parliament for the area, the traditional council and various philanthropists to, as a matter of urgency, offer the necessary assistance to the school which remains a legacy to the community.

She further challenged the fresh students to focus on their studies and eschew all negative vices and called on individuals and institutions in the host community and beyond to support the college in diverse ways.

As part of efforts by the local assembly, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly, to assist with the completion of the new campus, the Hon Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Simon Kweku Tetteh promised to present two transformers to facilitate the provision of electricity, as well as two laptops to the school.



On his part, Special Guest of Honour at the event, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Samuel Nuertey Ayertey congratulated the matriculants for gaining admission to the College and their readiness to accept the challenges that come with the pursuit of knowledge and challenged them to take up the stewardship and the challenge to excel in their education.

The deputy regional minister called on tutors to revise their teaching strategies to conform to modern teaching technologies to realize set targets.
“I would like to appeal to the tutors here to also use this occasion to reflect on your performance and revise your teaching strategies and notes, especially if they are not in line with modern methods of teaching and information,” he said.

According to Hon Ayertey, government was committed to supporting nursing and midwifery schools through the payment of nursing training allowances and the provision of infrastructural projects on campus.

“On our part as government, we will continue to support all Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges in Ghana. We will continue to pay the Nursing Training allowances to facilitate their education,” said the deputy regional minister. “It is worth mentioning that, we are also embarking on massive infrastructural development in schools and colleges of which this school will also benefit tremendously.”

Hon Ayertey said government was currently introducing a lot of innovations into the various school curricular and urged all to continue to support the government to continue its good works.

The students expressed that they were looking forward to starting their academic program at the prestigious institution.
