The Office of the Special Prosecutor has challenged the Kumasi High Court’s decision to acquit and discharge Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The anti-corruption agency has filed an appeal at a higher court to review the High Court’s decision.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) argues that the judgment delivered by Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori, who ruled that the video evidence showing the accused angrily demanding the return of his money did not conclusively prove an intent to influence the voting decisions of assembly members, was flawed and reflected a misinterpretation of key legal issues.

In a Facebook update on Thursday, June 26, 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) stated that it believes justice was not duly served, despite the weight of the evidence presented in court.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed an appeal challenging the decision of the High Court in Kumasi, which acquitted and discharged Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive of Juaben, Ashanti Region.

“Sarfo-Kantanka was seen in a widely circulated video demanding refunds from assembly members following the rejection of his nomination. He was subsequently charged with 26 counts of corruption, alleging he paid bribes to influence the outcome,” the update said.

It added, “The Court held that the video did not establish a direct link to the alleged bribery. The OSP, disagreeing with the ruling, argues that the judgment is inconsistent with the weight of the evidence and that the trial judge erred on key legal and factual issues. The OSP believes justice was not served and has taken steps to challenge the decision at the appellate level.”

Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka had been standing trial since May 2022, facing 26 counts of corruption following the emergence of the viral video, after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) filed criminal charges against him.

According to the OSP, the charges were in respect of corruption arising out of two public elections conducted in September and November 2021 for the confirmation or otherwise of his nomination by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the position of Municipal Chief Executive for Juaben in the Ashanti Region.
