OFFICIAL: EC declares Baba Jamal MP-elect for Ayawaso East

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has officially declared Baba Jamal, the candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the winner of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election.

Declaring the results after the close of polls on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the constituency collation centre, St Kizito Catholic Church in Nima, the returning officer stated that Baba Jamal won the election with 10,884 votes, representing over 63% of the total votes cast.

The candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Baba Ali Yussif, came second with 4,009 votes, and independent candidate Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda came third with 1,885 votes.

Another independent candidate, David Kannor, polled 104 votes, and Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People’s Party (LPP) came fifth with 43 votes.

In all, 17,048 people voted in the by-election across 113 polling stations. Out of the over 17,000 votes, 120 were spoiled ballots.

The Ayawaso East Constituency has been in existence since the creation of the Fourth Republic, which implies that the constituency has had nine parliamentary elections.

Data show that the NDC has won all nine parliamentary elections in the constituency, with the NPP coming second in all these elections, making this the 10th victory for the NDC.
