Mining Companies Urged To Show Interest In Communities

Bolgatanga, (Upper East) 8 Oct.,

Dr. Albert Tenga, Bolgatanga District Chief Executive, has called on mining companies in the district to show interest in the development of the area. He asked them to speed up their work, pay their levies and assist in organising viable cooperatives in the communities. Dr. Tenga was speaking to representatives of mining companies in the district at a meeting in Bolgatanga organised to discuss effective promotion of the mining industry, enhancement of revenue mobilisation, and how to ensure human safety and prevent destruction of the environment. He said the assembly's interest is to develop the infrastructure in the area and provide employment since the poor soils and erratic rains do not favour agriculture. ''The assembly is, therefore, concerned that mining is still disorganised and destructive to the environment''. Dr. Tenga noted that there is the need to educate the miners on what is expected of them and also organise small-scale miners for effective control and efficient revenue mobilization.
