Nigerian US deportee accuses Ghana of 'dumping' him, five others in Togo

One of the many African deportees from the United States who were received by Ghana to be sent back to their home countries has claimed that they have been abandoned in Togo.

According to a report by the BBC on October 1, 2025, the US deportee, who is a Nigerian, accused the government of Ghana of dumping him and five other deportees in Togo.

He claimed that they were told they were being transferred to a better accommodation, only to find themselves stuck in a hotel in Togo.

He alleged that a Ghanaian official illegally moved them to Togo by paying bribes to border officials, saying, "They did not take us through the main border; they took us through the back door. They paid the police there and dropped us in Togo."

The Nigerian man said they are now struggling in Togo because they have no documentation or family in the country.

"We're struggling to survive in Togo without any documentation. None of us has family in Togo. We're just stuck in a hotel. Right now, we're just trying to survive until our lawyers can help us with this situation," he is quoted as saying.

The deportee went on to describe the conditions they were living under in Ghana, which he termed as “deplorable.”

"Life there was really hard, so we asked for a better place, better medication, better healthcare and better water," the Nigerian man is quoted as saying.

He claimed that days after complaining about the living conditions, immigration officers came to their camp to inform them that they were being moved to a better facility, only for them to end up in Togo.

"When we arrived, we asked what we were doing at the border, and they told us they wanted us to sign some paperwork so they could take us to a hotel, but we didn't sign anything," he added.

What US judge said about deportation of West African migrants to Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama, in September, announced that Ghana was receiving West African nationals deported from the United States as part of President Trump's immigration policy targeting undocumented migrants.

So far, 14 deportees, including Nigerians and one Gambian, have arrived in Ghana. The government is expected to facilitate their return to their respective home countries.

Speaking at his first press conference since assuming office eight months ago, President Mahama explained, "We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don't need a visa to come to Ghana."

He added that Ghana cannot reject or turn away the deportees, since, as a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), it is bound by protocols that permit citizens of member states to travel freely within the region without visas.
