The Communications Officer in the Sunyani East Constituency of the New Patriotic Party, Abubakari Yakubu, has turned down an invitation extended to him and other constituency executives by the presidential aspirant, Dr Bryan Acheampong.
In a strongly worded letter sighted by this paper, Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, said while he initially looked forward to the scheduled meeting at the Rock City Hotel in the Eastern Region, he could no longer honor the invitation following what he described as “irresponsible tribal remarks” made by the former minister against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, Dr Acheampong’s recent comments suggesting that Dr Bawumia played a role in the protracted Bawku conflict were both “misguided and “dangerous” to the party's unity.
“Today, you have unfortunately joined the regrettable chorus of the misguided who are peddling lies about Dr Bawumia as the one who fueled the conflict between the Kusasis and the Mamprugus,” he wrote.

The Sunyani East communicator argued that the NPP’s struggles in recent elections were largely due to neglect of the grassroots and growing apathy within the party, not because of ethnic or tribal factors.
While describing Dr Acheampong as a successful businessman with the potential to one day lead the NPP, Yakubu expressed disappointment in what he called his “tribal outburst.”
He stressed that leadership at the presidential level required “composure, caution, and selfless dedication to the people, not profit-making instincts.”

“This decision aligns with my longstanding principle of distancing myself from any entity or individual that poses a threat to the Party’s integrity, irrespective of the potential consequences,” he declared.
Yakubu urged Dr Acheampong to refrain from statements that could weaken internal party cohesion ahead of the crucial general elections.
The NPP presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026, to elect a new flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
