The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, has expressed alarm over the rising number of heavy duty machines entering Ghana, noting that the Tema Port receives more than 200 excavators daily.

Talking on JoyFM's News Night on Thursday, June 5, he described the surge in excavator imports as an "invasion," citing regulatory and environmental concerns.

He emphasised the need for urgent policy action to address issues like illegal mining and unregulated construction.

The minister stated that over 1,200 excavators have been detained at Tema Port after a temporary clearance halt, as part of efforts to combat illegal mining.

He further emphasised the Ministry of Transport's role in enforcing a ban on excavator imports.

“We, the Ministry of Transport, in our support in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey – we are putting in place this ban or prohibition of importation of excavators into our country,” he said.

The minister added that the ban isn't a total restriction, as licensed mining companies and legitimate contractors can still import excavators with proper permits and vetting.

He, however, warned that unauthorised imports will be denied clearance.
