Olympics, RTU deadlock

WONDER Club, Great Olympics, exhibited the form that has lately propelled them to win three matches on the trot. But they left the handful of spectators who were at the Len Clay Stadium to watch them conjure their magic disappointed as they settled for a one-one draw game with RTU.
Olympics dominated the first half and fired from all cylinders but had to wait till the 45th mark to open the scores.
Rasta-haried Michael Asante controlled a pass and dribbled two RTU markers to lay a perfect pass for Robert Odamettey to beat goalkeeper Hamza Saibu in post for the Tamale lads who played home away from home for the opening goal.
That gingered RTU to re-organise themselves for a continuous onslaught in Oly’s goal area.
In the 57th minute, RTU made a breakthrough but substitute Joseph Adjei failed to clinch the equaliser from Gilbert Ayekede’s cross.
From that moment, RTU never looked back and pushed more men upfront with Alex Kyeremateng directing balls from the rear.
RTU fetched the equalizer in the 86th minute. They won a cornerkick which was wasted. However, a minute later, Bobby Rahman’s curling kick from an infringement found Ayekede who sent a low cross to Hamza Mohammed to head home the equaliser.

Hasaacas, Faisal draw

SEKONDI Hasaacas were yesterday held to a 1-1 draw by visiting King Faisal in their legaue match played at the Gyandu Park.
Kicking off under the instructions of referee Felix Ameh of Accra, King Faisal briefly dictated the pace but it was Hasaacas who nearly opened the scores in the eight minute, but striker Mohammed Issah’s goal-bound shot was saved by keeper Opoku Ware who was in post for King Faisal.
With the ball swinging from one side to the other, Hasaacas opened the scores in the 24th minute through veteran Kofi Abbrey.
In the 61st minute, King Faisal equalised through substitute Adamu Moro Tinana from a long range shot that beat keeper George Owu.
Hasaacas re-doubled their efforts and carried the game to their opponents in the dying minutes but their forwards made up of Frank Turkson and Francis Adiu made a mess of all the chances that came their way.

Ghapoha pip G’fields

AN 86th minute header by former Goldfields player, Kwabena Boateng, earned his present club, Tema Ghapoha, another important victory in their ABC Premier League match played at the Tema Park yesterday.
Important as that victory was, it was also significant for the same player who helped the Tema lads to break the seeming invincibility jinx of Accra Heart of Oak this season in a similar match at the same venue last Wednesday.
In a match that was largely expected to end in a draw, Goldfields needed experience more than anything else to hold on to that prediction while Ghapoha needed to keep more pressure on their opponents to record another victory.
In the end, it was Ghapoha’s persistent harrassment of Goldfields that paid off.
In the first half, the two sides playing in a less tense atmosphere as compared to what has been happening at various league centres took turns to dominate proceedings with Ghapoha slightly on top.
On the few occasions that Goldfields took over, their lead striker, Nana Arhin Duah, missed a couple of chances including a 40th minute strike that was overruled by referee Jacob Wilson-Sey because he had earlier whistled for an infringement.
Determined to win at all cost, Ghaopha began the second half by pulling out ineffective Hope Doe Aziz for Nana Yaw who brought some more bite in the team’s attack.
However, his teammates and fans had to go through some disappointing moments as he wasted a number of goalscoring chances. And so did Boateng and Don Bortey who were spearheading the Ghapoha attack.
Playing with a side that had more inexperienced players, Goldfields suffered from the absence of their playermakers, Guinean imports Momo Waddel and Sylla, as they could not break through the tight Ghapoha defence, try as they did.
By the 65th minute, it became obvious that the visitors needed more experienced hands, and the technical bench rightly brought on their most experienced player, Sammy Adjei, for young Eric Boakye and Kamara Dini for Amoah “Tico” Ofosu who had a tough time. The changes paid off with Adjei urging his side forward with his overlapping role.
That helped to change the tide and turn the pressure on Ghapoha but a defensive slip on the part of James Boateng in the dying minutes of the game gave Bortey a leeway to lay a mid-air pass in the way of Kwabena Boateng to nod past a completely displaced goalkeeper Constant Martey who had until then worked tirelessly to hold any trouble at bay.
