Management calls for calm as it works to make e-learning module accessible to all

Management of the University of Ghana says that it is working to make the e-learning module accessible to all staff and students alike.

The University of Ghana on March 23, 2020 approved a proposal for the remaining seven weeks of teaching for the second semester to take place online following the closure of all public and tertiary institutions in the country.

The announcement was however met with stiff opposition from students as some described it as discriminatory.

One of such student is the President of the Alexander Kwapong Hall Junior Common Room, Divine Edem Kwadzodeh.

“I’m going to my village tomorrow [Tuesday]. I don’t have internet connectivity there. If they do not get internet connectivity to my village, I cannot do this. This is discriminatory against those of us with no internet connectivity where we’re planning to spend the quarantine time,” he told UniversNews when the announcement was made.

But reacting to the concerns of students, Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Godfred Bokpin, called for calm and indicated that efforts were being made to ensure that the e-learning module is well rolled out.

“At the policy level, I think that has been said that this is the way to go. There is that broad framework to be able to do this. But of course, we have not been massive on it as it is now and particularly so, we need to engage academically with our students, we need to reconnect and all that. And I also do recognize and I believe that management is aware of the operational challenges when it comes to implementing the online delivery. So these are challenges that I believe management is addressing.” he stated.

On Monday, Management of the University of Ghana announced that it has approved a proposal for the remaining seven weeks of teaching for the second semester to take place online.

The online academic activities will be undertaken using the Universities Sakai Learning Management System.

However, it has already reached an agreement with Vodafone Ghana.
