5th International Africa Writers Day To Be Held In Accra

Delegates to the 5th International Africa Writers Day have started arriving in Accra for the one-week festival, which opens on Saturday 1st November. The festival, which is under the theme, "Readership and African Literature", will be attended by 50 delegates from 30 countries. The first to arrive was, Mr.. Mahama Saihi of Algeria, who is the Vice-President of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA). The Secretary-General of PAWA, Mr.. Atukwei Okai, who was at the Airport to meet the delegates said, the day was instituted by the OAU to recognise and honour writers for their contribution to the development of society. The festival will be celebrated annually in Africa and other parts of the world. Mr.. Atukwei-Okai said the programme lined up for the occasion at the PAWA Headquarters in Accra, includes an international colloquium on Readership and African Literature, Developmental objective and strategies. The second PAWA annual lecture will be delivered by Miss Nadine Gordiner of South Africa. She will speak on the topic: "The status of the writer in the world". Which world, whose world". The first PAWA world poetry festival is aimed at getting the international community to join Africa in celebrating the day and to observe the second PAWA congress. Mr.. Atukwei-Okai said, the celebration is aimed at bringing together writers of the world and promote the best interest in poetry and literature as well as encourage the development of the environment within which readership can be inculcated in the people to enhance enlightenment.
