Mahama advises Bawkus, Alavanyos et al to learn from Akuapems

President John Dramani Mahama has advised people in conflict-racked areas Bawku, Alavanyo, Nkonya and the likes to emulate the people of Akuapem in ridding their towns of ethnic conflicts.

“Akuapem has always been an island of peace and civility and unity.”

President Mahama outlined the effects of ethnic conflicts, lamenting it leaves in its wake stagnation and damage to people.

President Mahama made these remarks on Friday, October 10 when he joined the people of Akuapem to mark this year’s Odwira Festival.

In attendance were Former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, and several government functionaries.

In his address, President Mahama charged conflict-hit areas to take a leaf from the Akuapems, who he said are noted for their civil behaviour and politeness.

“It is my hope that areas like Bawku, Alavanyo, Nkonya and others will take a leaf from the Akuapem people and let peace prevail,” President Mahama said.

He observed that chieftaincy disputes and traditional conflicts damage people and leave little space for development.
