Tema Assembly To Spend 402 Million Cedis On New Shops, Sheds

Tema,(Greater Accra) 4 Nov. The Tema municipal assembly (TMA) is to spend 402 million cedis on the construction of new shops and sheds at the community one market. The expansion programme is aimed at improving conditions around the periphery of the market and the area called "Kwasea Dwaso" where traders often display their wares on the ground for sale to the public. Mr. Samuel Akoto, acting municipal engineer who disclosed this to the press, said the project will involve the construction of a two- storeyed building containing 32 shops and toilet facilities behind the yam market. The assembly which is solely financing the project will also put up two sheds for gari, corn dough and kenkey sellers who have agreed to move to a temporary location near Chandirans until the project is completed in eight months' time. Mr. Akoto said security around the market will be improved through the provision of additional gates and spikes on fences. The contract, he said, has been awarded to ESTOD LIMITED and AWMART LIMITED, private construction firms in Tema. In another development, the TMA is to design and build new shops along some major streets of Ashaiman where it recently demolished certain dilapidated structures. The project forms part of the assembly's beautification programme for Ashaiman.
