Truck pusher sentenced to 20 years in jail for robbery

Ho, Sept. 11, GNA - Selorm Ewulake, 23, a truck pusher, has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment by a Ho High Court for robbing a trader of 800,000 cedis.

Ewulake pleaded guilty but pleaded with the court to be lenient with him.

Mr Elias Gli, a State Attorney, told the court that Ewulake and an accomplice, who is still at large, in January 1998 trailed a trader, who had come to sell wares at the Tongor-Dzemini Market and robbed her. Mr Gli said the complainant, who was on her way to the market in the morning, developed diarrhoea that compelled her to attend to nature's call in a nearby bush.

Ewulake with his accomplice appeared at the scene and asked the trader to pay 40,000 cedis as spot fine.

As the trader resisted they pulled her to the ground and forcibly took a piece of cloth containing 800,000 cedis around her waist and escaped, Mr Gli told the court.

Mr Gli said the complainant screamed for help that drew the attention of passers-by. They led her to the market to identify Ewulake as one of the two, who attacked her.
