LIVE UPDATES: 63rd Independence Day celebration in Kumasi

About 150 diplomats are expected to be at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for the 63rd Independence Day parade where the president will address the country.

The 42,000-capacity stadium is expected be full as Kumasi, Ghana’s oldest and second-largest city is hosting the event for the first time in the country’s history.

The roads are decorated, the major streets being cleaned up, the stadium all clean and shiny, the stage is set, and it appears all that may be left is for the personalities and guests to arrive and the cameras to start rolling and then it’s all action.

It's all excitement and businesses have started strategizing how to make the most of the big event in town, the first-ever Independence Day celebration being held in the Ashanti Region.

From the very first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to the very last before President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, all Independence Day anniversaries have been held in the capital of Ghana; the Greater Accra Region.

In 2019, there was a twist to that history, for the first time ever, the celebrations were taken out of the capital and sent to the Northern Region, Tamale specifically, as efforts to seal the Dagbon Peace Pact that had been achieved.

It worked, the President received a lot of applause and commendations and maybe, they just decided to take up the idea, move the occasion around the nation for every regional capital to have a little feel of the big occasion.
